Nintendo was already riding the crest of a wave with its Switch gaming console, but we didn’t realize quite how big that wave was.
We do now, with Nintendo announcing that the Switch is the fastest selling console ever, at least in the United States.
Announced today, the information may not actually be all that of a surprise when you think about it. According to Nintendo, the Switch has sold 4.8 million units in just ten months. That eclipses the previous record which was held by the Wii, another of Nintendo’s offerings. The Wii managed to sell 4 million units across the United States in the same ten month window of time, but a what was surely a strong holiday period for the Switch has seen it take the crown. If you think back, the Wii was notoriously difficult to get hold of, likely hampering its own selling power.
“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”
Having launched on March 3rd, 2017, the Switch has been helped by a steadily growing catalog of impressive games. It may not have been a launch title, but Super Mario Odyssey has proven hugely popular since its arrival on the platform and with Zelda: Breath of the Wild winning awards left and right, it does not take too much effort to work out why the Switch is doing so well.
Throw in the Switch’s portability and the console really does seem to have the winning formula. We can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for the little wonder.
