Snapchat users who are taking advantage of iOS jailbreak tweaks such as Snapchat++ and Phantom have begun to find that their accounts are banned for up to 12 hours once again, with Snapchat now seemingly singling out users who are taking advantage of some tweaks in order to game the system.
A number of users have taken to social media in order to share their experiences.
When those with Snapchat-related tweaks installed access the image-based social network, they are now receiving an error, announcing that their account is temporarily banned.
Hi there! It looks like you’re using a third-party app to access Snapchat. We prohibit the use of third-party apps as they can compromise your account’s security. Because of your use of third-party apps, your Snapchat account will be locked for 12 hours.
The act of blocking people from accessing apps when they are using jailbroken iPhones or iPads is nothing new, with many banking apps and even movie or TV streaming services doing the same.
However, what Snapchat is doing is somewhat different in that it does not appear to be detecting the jailbreak per se, but instead is spotting that specific Snapchat-related jailbreak tweaks are installed. It’s unclear how it is going about this, or indeed why it has started to take action now.
Snapchat has taken similar steps in the past, cracking down on non-jailbreak tweak users who accessed its service. However, that practice did cease so it would be interesting to know what has prompted the latest round of account banning. It’s also unknown whether repeat infringers will see that 12-hour ban start to increase, or indeed whether a permanent ban is possible.
Given Snapchat’s current problems we suspect it would rather not damage its user count any further, though.
